Symposium on Modern Nigerian Art in Ife

By Chuka Nnabuife

SUBMISSION of papers intended for presentation at the second National Symposium on Nigeria Art ends tomorrow. Tagged Styles, Schools and Movements in Modern Nigeria Art, the conference will hold between September 26 and 29, 2006 at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Essentially, it is designed to identify landmark contributions of art schools in Nigeria vis-?-vis influences from the western world.

"Modern art in Nigeria has been repeatedly referred to as an interaction of European art and a consciousness of originality in the infusion of Nigerian creative traditions. While the various art movements and schools, of Europe were taught art history in the art school, the conscious efforts of the 'Zaria Rebels' in their philosophy of 'Natural Synthesis' gave birth to a dynamism, which characterise modern art of today's Nigeria.

"Over the years, several school of art have been established in Nigeria: universities, colleges of education and polytechnics. Other forms of training include apprenticeship, art (summer) workshops and traditional (family) lineage apprenticeship. However, there are still questions as to what constitutes an art movement or art school," said the organisers.

Specifically, the conference is expected to examine seven sub-themes including Movements and Schools in Modern Art of the 20th Century; Emergence of Movements and Schools in Nigeria; Evolution of Movement and Schools in Nigeria; Patterns of Discourse and Documentation; Tradition, Evolution and Appropriation in the Nigeria Art Scene; The Zaria Art School: Proponents of Natural Synthesis and Subsequent Characteristics of Nigerian Art; and The Role of Art Schools and Movements in National Development.

The National Gallery of Art (NGA), one of the organisers, envisages that the symposium will contribute to scholarship and help participants to "situate themselves and evaluate their contribution to art teaching, practice, management and cultural development."

Speakers who are yet to submit their papers are urged to do so either by hand, post or e-mail, "with the sender's telephone number and e-mail address included. If sent by e-mail, it should be sent as a Microsoft Word Attachment.

"If delivered by hand or surface mail, printed version of material being submitted should be accompanied by a 3.5 diskette or 100m zip disk with the same material saved in it in Microsoft Word format."

Abstracts should reach NGA not later than tomorrow while notification of acceptance will be sent by next Tuesday. All materials and enquires should be addressed to Director, Department of Research and Publications, NGA. John Edore, Keeper, National Gallery of Modern Art, Aina Onabolu Complex, National Theatre, Iganmu. Or Prof. P.S.O. Aremu, H.O.D. Fine Arts, Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, O.A.U. Ile-Ife.
